Christmas is coming, and with it the pressure of getting the house ready for guests and a month of heavier cooking. Here is a practical guide to getting your home Christmas-ready spread over a few weeks.
Six Weeks Before (Early November)
Start with the things that take longest: curtains and soft furnishings that hold dust, windows with sea salt build-up, and any deep cleaning jobs you have been putting off. Professional carpet clean if carpets are looking tired - do this well in advance. Deep clean the oven - you will use it far more heavily over Christmas.
Four Weeks Before
The rooms guests will actually see: living areas, dining room, hallway and guest bedrooms. Deep vacuum sofas and armchairs, dust all shelving and light fittings, clean skirting boards throughout, sort the hallway - this is the first thing guests see.
Two Weeks Before
Kitchen and bathroom deep clean: full kitchen clean including inside cupboards, fridge, hob and extractor fan. Bathroom: descale everything, re-grout any mouldy tile lines, clean the extractor fan.
The Week Before
Light maintenance only. A quick vacuum, surfaces wiped, bathroom freshened. This is also when decorations go up.
The Day Before Guests Arrive
Fresh towels and bedding in the guest room. Clean bathroom. Quick vacuum of the main areas.
